Intensity and effort is the key to building muscle. Without it, you couldn’t use progressive overload, forced reps, or any other advanced lifting techniques.

Muscle growth depends on constantly increased intensity and overload. Not only that, there’s such a feeling of complete joy and exuberation after completing a killer, intense workout.

You feel good, you feel strong, and you feel confident. There’s nothing like training with complete, 100% intensity. And it’s the most important part of building muscle consistently.

The truth is, if anything is worth doing, you have to give it all you’ve got, or you probably shouldn’t even do it to begin with.

There’s something incredibly intense about lifting 400 pounds on the bench press. Feeling a power in you as you push the weight with all you’ve got.

Not only does this intense, heavy lifting help you to build muscle, but it will also increase your confidence and self-esteem over time.

Intense efforts result in increases in muscle size and strength. The closer you come to using 100% intensity, the greater the chances of building muscle.

But it’s impossible to use peak intensity for long duration when training. After all, you can’t use max intensity when doing long-distance running.

As a result, the longer-duration but less intense activities you do will result in less muscle stimulation and growth. That’s why brief, intense bursts of exercise is most important for building muscle.

Those interested in the most muscle growth possible must regularly exercise at the 100% intensity level. Anything less than that and you will not see the best results.

But the problem is, intense efforts require motivation. It’s tough to lift with max intensity all the time. It can be very draining and it places huge demands on the body.

I’m sure you’ve felt, at one time or another, that you didn’t want to do anything too intense. You went to the gym, but didn’t feel like working out. Or you felt really tired and sluggish. Didn’t you find it tough to use any intensity at all?

Believe me, it takes motivation and determination to keep training at an intense level. But if building muscle is that important to you, you’ll find ways to keep upping the intensity.

That’s why it’s important to have strong reasons for working out, goals that you really want to achieve. It’s amazing how much intensity you can use if you’re really after a particular goal.

So the more you want a specific goal, the more intensity you’ll train with. If you’re tired of being picked on or teased for being skinny or small, that will keep you training with intensity in the gym.

Start being more aware of the level of intensity you’re using in the gym. Are you giving it your very best when you step in the gym?

If not, you may not have strong enough goals or a strong enough reason for working out. Until you find your “hot button”, 100% intensity will elude you.

Visualize what you want to achieve from working out in the gym. Picture yourself with the lean, muscular physique you want. And realize that it will take intense and consistent training to achieve that.

And since intensity is the key to building muscle, start using as much of it in the gym as you can. If you start training with 100% intensity, you’ll soon start achieving all of your muscle building goals.

Bhakti means devotion to the Almighty. Bhakti yoga deals with devotion to God and achieving the union with him. This is the easiest of all yoga types. This branch of yoga teaches the relation between the devotee and the divine. It does not involve any technical or complicated procedures. There is no need of any intellectual capacity to master this yoga. It has appealed to the common man because it gives him a feeling security and develops a kind of reliance and dependence on the object of his devotion.

Bhakti yoga assumes that there is a higher power that has created the universe and is all-powerful. This power has the capacity to confer grace and mercy on him and thus protecting him from all the harms and evils. The devotee or bhakta is expected to make himself fit for receiving this divine grace. For this, he has to practice devotion and virtue. His ultimate goal should be to unite with this divine power and rest eternally in happiness and peace. The devotee surrenders all his motives and acts to the Divine Power. He renounces all the responsibilities towards the good or bad consequences of all his actions and ascribes it to the will of the Supreme.

Devotion and faith play a vital role in this branch of yoga. The devotee or bhakta is supposed to be highly religious, should adopt a friendly stance towards all the other living beings including animals, read religious texts, concentrate on the symbol of the Divine, think and wish well for the others etc. The beauty of this yoga lies in its simplicity. This has made it one of the most appealing of all the yoga types. Following this yoga develops the peace of mind in an individual. A peaceful individual will always think happy and prosperous thoughts and will thus lead a happy life.

Aerobic flyers, ab rollers, and other fitness fads may come and go, but the trusty treadmill has stood the test of time.Treadmills are much less likely to end up in next year’s garage sale for one simple reason-people use them.

Exercising at home has many perks, especially among today’s time-crunched families. Studies have shown that people who have home fitness equipment are more likely to exercise consistently than those who have gym memberships or attend fitness classes. At home, the machine is right there in sight, calling your name. It’s much easier to get a quick 20- minute workout when you don’t have to find matching socks or fight through gridlock traffic.

One of the main reasons people buy treadmills rather than other machines is because the movement required is something they already know how to do. With all the treadmills on the market, you really have to be a savvy shopper. Your first stop should be the nearest fitness specialty store. To make sure you get the best machine for your money, you should follow some tips.

Measure the space allocated for the machine both horizontally and vertically. You don’t want to bump your head on the ceiling every other step.Bring a measuring tape with you to the store. Leave home dressed for a workout. Test the equipment at the level you expect to use it and stay on the machine for at least 10-15 minutes.

Exercise equipment is not supposed to make you seasick. If the treadmill rocks back and forth, forget it. Sturdy construction will not only ensure durability, but also make your workouts more enjoyable. Parts of the machine should be welded together, not held together by nuts and bolts that will soon jiggle loose.

Shoppers may also want to consider purchasing a short-term gym membership to try out equipment. Many gyms offer a one-month trial membership and some even give one- to two-week free memberships.

Added features usually mean added dollars. Fancy programs and heart monitors may serve as motivation, but many people find these addons unnecessary. If you are pinching pennies, look for quality parts and sturdy construction, and skip the virtual racing programs and automated pacers. It is always better to go in knowing what you need, rather than letting a salesman talk you into something.

Sit down with the retailer and review the warranty. Get everything in writing and ask questions. Does the retailer assemble the treadmill? Does it have a weight limit? Be aware that some warranties may be voided if the user is over a specified weight. Keep all the packaging just in case you need to return the machine.

The first thing to investigate on a treadmill is the motor. Depending if you are walking or running, you can easily place 80 to 250 percent of you weight on the treadmill every time your foot hits the belt. It’s the motor’s job to take a beating and still keep a constant speed.

Overall motor strength is measured in ‘continuous’ horsepower. But, things get tricky, Some cheaper treadmills advertise a deceptively higher ‘peak’ horsepower rating to make up for below-average continuous-duty rating.

When inspecting the belt, comfortable length and width should be your main concern. Get a belt that is too short and, with one foul step, you could end up slamming into a wall. But too large a belt makes the treadmill work harder, adding wear and tear to the motor.

Advanced treadmills come with a series of customized workouts that act as your personal training coach. Some offer preprogrammed workouts that automatically adjust grade and speed as you exercise to keep your heart at a steady aerobic rate. There also is space to program several of your own workouts.

Buying a treadmill can be a costly investment. Many fitness experts will tell you that a solid, dependable treadmill costs at least $1,000. But knowing what to look for can save you hundreds of dollars.

Every model you see on TV has it: the 6 perfect ripples on the stomach and all the girls just melt at the sight. Now you’ve decided you want to be that guy that just drives the women wild. You’re going to do whatever it takes to get a six pack!

Conventional knowledge leads us to believe that the way to get a six pack is to sit-ups, and lots of them. The truth, however, is that you may develop very strong upper abs, but they may never show. The abs are muscles that hide behind a layer of fat. In order to see them, you must first work on removing the fat that hides these muscles. The proper way to do this is with cardio exercise like jogging, running, riding a bike or using the stair-stepper!

Try jogging at a constant rate for 15 minutes a day for a week. Increase the time by 5 minutes every week. If you think you can go longer or harder, do it. Be sure to avoid eating fattening foods, drinking soda and consuming too much sugar as it will only mask your hard work.

After you’re in a cardio routine, you can begin with the sit-ups or crunches. Get in a routine of doing sit-ups as soon as you wake up and right before you go to bed. Start with, for example, 50 each morning and night, and increase that number every week as well. If your muscles are sore, that’s great; you’re doing your job. The abs and the calf muscles are the only muscles in the body that can be worked day in and day out without worry of damage and need for rest.

Stick with the routine and you will see results in 1 or 2 months. Coupled with a strict diet, you can build your six-pack just in time for summer! If you wish to build more muscle and have a professional workout plan tailored to your needs, visit your local gym and enlist the services of a personal trainer. A membership to a gym is also a great start to losing weight and gaining muscle.

Working with your own coach can be a significant investment – even with hourly rates differing vastly across regions and countries – you are still paying a fair amount of money for the expert knowledge that will help you achieve your health and fitness goals and look after one of, if not, THE most important assets you have – your body.

So how should you choose a trainer and what are the things you need to look out for, ask them and receive from them?

First and foremost, you MUST ensure your trainer is fully and properly qualified. This means they should hold, at the very least:

1) A CPR certification – if you do have any accidents or problems your coach must know how to deal with them and ensure your safety at all times.

2) A recognised fitness/personal training qualification – this obviously differs from country to country and there are only a few internationally-recognised qualifications. Most countries have a self-regulating body – in the UK this is REPS (the Register of Exercise Professionals) and you should ensure your coach is registered here before you even consider hiring them. If in doubt, ask your trainer which qualifications they have – most won’t be offended but will be keen to show them off.

Once you are satisfied they hold the necessary basic qualifications, here are a few pointers to look out for. A ‘good’ versus a ‘bad’ coach should:

1. Ideally hold additional qualifications and be updating these all the time. As our scientific knowledge about the body increases, the methods with which we train the body change. If your trainer qualified 5 years ago but has done no further qualifications since, it’s likely their training methods & knowledge will be out of date. A leader in health & fitness training is the CHEK Institute – their practitioners work with some of the world’s top athletes, including PGA Golfers and Olympians. A CHEK-trained coach (even at the basic level) will usually be far more highly qualified than the personal trainer with a “typical” national training qualification.

2. Address more than just your fitness levels & give you more than just a fitness programme. Exercise is only a small part of what makes us “fit” and “healthy”. To help you achieve your health & fitness goals, your coach should address several areas of your life – your nutrition & eating habits, sleep patterns, stress levels – all of these affect & determine how likely you are to achieve your goals and if not addressed, can prevent you from attaining optimum levels of health & fitness.

3. Perform some initial assessments. In order to help you get where you want to be, your coach must know where you are starting from. You should be asked to complete a PAR-Q (Physical Activity Readiness questionnaire) at a minimum to ensure your safety & ability to perform exercise and your trainer should perform some basic tests such as weight, blood pressure, perhaps body composition, girth measurements, lung capacity and aerobic fitness or strength. If more qualified, additional assessments such as postural analysis, spinal curve measurements and abdominal wall function should be tested to design a more accurate programme. And if your coach is really good, they will assess your physiological load levels to determine what type of exercise (strength training, cardio, meditation, stretching) your body is currently able to cope with. This is essential if you want to know whether what you’ve paid them has been worth it – if you can’t see the progress or differences working with a coach has made because they forgot to measure a baseline when you started with them, then although you may feel fitter, slimmer or stronger you won’t have hard facts & figures to prove it.

4. Discuss your goals with you and adjust any unrealistic expectations you may have. To get your business, a trainer may promise that you will lose half a stone of fat in 2 weeks or you’ll get the body of your dreams in a month even though you’ve never exercised before and are 3 stone overweight – this does you no good. You will have unrealistic expectations & goals from the outset and will be much more likely to become de-motivated & disillusioned when you realise you haven’t lost a stone in a week. Whilst a good trainer will not discourage you from your ultimate goals, they should at least educate you on the realistic progressions you are likely to make.

5. Design a programme that is tailored especially to your needs and your body. This may sound obvious but I have seen plenty of trainers run through identical training sessions with every one of their clients. This ties in with the third point – if they haven’t completed assessments & initial tests on you, then they won’t know what your individual needs are. You are paying them to provide you with a fully customised service – that’s why it’s called ‘personal training ‘!

6. Track your progress at every session & be working to a periodisation plan – you may not see them carrying a clipboard or doing this during the session but your trainer should know when they need to adjust your programme and what adjustments to make. If they’ve been winging your sessions and haven’t been planning & tracking your progress, how will they know what adjustments to make after a few weeks? They should have designed & be following a periodised training plan to ensure you are achieving your goals during each phase of your training.

7. Show you how to exercise safely & correctly – again this may seem a given but if your trainer gives you a programme and then just leaves you to it, they are putting you at risk and not only will you probably struggle to achieve your goals without their attention, you may even injure yourself. Similarly, if they are supervising you, they should constantly be giving you tips, adjustments or even just positive affirmations that you are performing your exercises correctly – not watching the sport on TV or chatting to other staff & clients in the gym.

All of the above are nothing however, if you don’t actually get on with your coach! They may be the most highly qualified person you can find – but if spending an hour with them (sometimes 3 or more times a week) is like spending an hour in the dentist’s chair or worse, then you probably aren’t going to get the full benefit of working with that trainer. They don’t have to be your best buddy, just ensure that you feel comfortable with them, can trust them and that you do enjoy your sessions – in a masochistic kind of way!

Treadmills offers a great alternative to walking outside as well as much more versatile than outdoor walking especially in choosing your terrain and walking attributes. Treadmills are a great investment because they are easy to setup, and use. There is no special training when using a treadmill that might be necessary when using weight training equipment or other fitness machines. The price of treadmills is going to vary quite a bit. For a low end model of a treadmill the cost is going to range from 300 to 2000, for the high end people can easily drop over 5000 dollars for a deluxe model. The price varies usually due to the computer system that is present with in the treadmill.

Many treadmills of the feature of recording stats including heart rate, time, calories, fat, and distance. Another feature which should be taken into consideration is the horsepower of the treadmill. For the average consumer a treadmill should offer a continuous duty rating. While some treadmills may brag about their peak horsepower which could be extremely high this means at ideals conditions the treadmill might be able to achieve that. There for it is most important to know what the motor of the treadmill can be regularly and consistently. Treadmills can also be very noisy. If noise is a concern for you then seek out treadmills which have DC motors which are significantly quieter then the alternatives.

Treadmills should be strong and stable. When you are testing out a potential treadmills for purchase make sure you are dresses as if you are actually going to exercise and wearing your running shoes. Check the rails to make sure they are properly secured and you can easily wrap your hand around them. Other things to check is if the running path and belt are large enough for you to run on. Another great feature of treadmills is that they are programmable and can be preset. This is a great way to make your exercise experience more enjoyable. Also a bottle holder and magazine rack are handy conveniences when doing a daily workout.

Take into consideration the amount of space you have to devote to your treadmill this will determine which type of treadmill is bets for you. Remember to measure your space and bring home the dimensions of the treadmill first. Most exercise equipment looks small on the sales floor but can be too big for a normal sized room.

Copyright 2005 Jeff Garcia

It costs the state over $100 billion a year, over 100 million Americans are still at risk and more than 400,000 have died from it over the past 12 months…

It is sadly self inflicted and second only to smoking and left to its current trends it will easily take the number one slot within the next 5 years. It is of course Obesity! And yet no one seems to butt an eyelid despite it being a serious major problem, in fact an epidemic. But how often do we think why?

Who is responsible? The food manufacturers, the government or us – the individual. Jeff Garcia of Aspirational Solutions said “In simple terms we all have choices as to what we decide to put inside our own body in the form of food, and therefore the ultimate responsibility lies with the individual with respect to their chosen diet. Obesity is having a massive impact on the western world at large with all the causes well documented but comparatively little in terms, of solid long term real solutions. As a research specialist, we have severe concerns regarding the current obesity trends and have developed methodologies to help combat the problem for individuals based on our nutritional inheritance. At the end of the day it is up to each and every individual to take responsibility for their own being.”

Our nutritional world is full of contradiction. On the one hand our Supermarkets sell slimming products alongside the very products that contribute to people being overweight and obese in the first instance. The Grocery industry employs highly paid and powerful lobbyists to work with Government to ensure; not only that there is no adverse legislation passed that could in any way affect the industry’s sales; but indeed that Government representatives never communicate to the public at large in a manner that may have an adverse effect on the sales of a grocery product.

There would be a public outcry at the mere thought of BSE (Mad Cow Disease) being detected in livestock and yet many food manufacturers, particularly fast food chains consistently produce food containing ingredients which could be justifiably described at nothing less than ‘toxic’. In reality why would any of the offending manufacturers want to change when they are making billions of dollars profit each and every year. In a similar vein, do the health and diet companies really want you to succeed in losing weight? Perhaps not, as their mere existence is dependant on you not being successful. They are dependant on ’successful failures’. An Internet search on the word “Diet” reveals in excess of 96,000,000 web pages of diet plans, pills, potions, miracle cures and yet we are in the midst of an obesity epidemic. So we must ask what is it that is simply not working. We only have to look around us to see with our own eyes that there is a problem.

Bob Schwartz – an American health expert and nutritionist has stated “Diets are in fact designed not to work.” The evidence of 60% of the American population is proof enough.

Both the grocery and diet industries are to too big, too powerful and above all worth billions. There is no intention nor reason for them to change. Are they not part of the problem? You and only you have the power to change and therefore you need, must and can ‘gain control’ as an individual. There is only one successful method to enduring weight loss and that is to embark on a nutritional scheme that is in line with the expectation of your body. The range of ‘acceptable foods’ is believed to be far less narrow that originally thought. This is based on the fact that we have existed on this planet for 99.5% of our time as ‘humanoid beings’ for well over 2 million years as a ‘hunter/gatherer’. We primarily existed on a diet of meat, fish, shellfish, plant vegetation, fruit, seeds and nuts for the majority of this time until the agricultural revolution. This is eons of time during which our body has formed natural biological and chemical processes to best extract the nutrients it needs from these food types during the digestion process. The foods were natural and ‘raw’ and in effect the body had to ‘work hard’ to extract the carbohydrates, proteins and fats it required, in addition to the essential vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals it needs to live healthily. This is all just part of the process of evolution where only the fittest survive.

But how divorced is today’s diet of manufactured processed food to the foods consumed by our distant cousins. Our diet has so dramatically changed in only the last 40-50 years – and not for the better. Our food has become more processed which has in effect, has made it ‘too easy’ to digest and it does not contain the same balance of carbohydrates, protein and fats that our body has been biologically designed to accept. It also contains far less vitamins and minerals, and more importantly, little or no phytochemicals that our body has relied on for disease protection over hundreds and thousand of generations. So why should we be surprised that Mother Nature has reacted in light that 40-50 years is not even the width of an atom on the evolutionary scale. In terms of digestion our body is doing exactly the same at it was 30,000 years ago. It is therefore us that has to make the change as an individual to achieve a nutritional balance that has formed part of our genetic inheritance over millions of years of evolution. Nature will not change in our lifetime, so we must.

Therefore …No change = No enduring weight loss and good health.

The changes a successful dieter must achieve are:

1. To ensure a sufficient daily quantity of water is consumed to allow the processes of cell metabolism to occurs efficiently, particularly relating to digestion and energy release. The vast majority of these metabolic chemical reactions require the presence of the H2O molecule – therefore adequate consumption of water is essential, but surprisingly this is only achieved by the minority.

2. To revert back to consuming more foods that are natural, free from being heavily processed and therefore allied to nutrition that the body has been designed for and expects. The more natural the food is, the more it is in line with our genetic nutritional inheritance and the more energy required for its digestion. The reverse is also true. Additionally, a wide range of natural food contains all the micronutrients, including phytochemicals that are essential for our healthy existence, aside from the well documented vitamins and minerals.

3. Develop a lifestyle that energizes and works the body’s muscular structure which is a prerequisite to the biological processes that result in the promotion of good health and well being. Exercise acts as a evolutionary ‘biological trigger’ to indicate to the body that your ’self being’ is capable of securing food as in the act of ‘hunting and gathering’. Not exercising triggers a reaction to ’store fat’ and it is a biological mechanism to support survival. It lowers the rate of energy consumption and metabolism and is based on the assumption that your ’self being’ is not capable of ‘hunting’ and is therefore unable to secure food. This is Nature’s survival technique to reserve energy and maintain a constant body temperature as exercise and movement generates heat and helps to maintain warmth.

4. Mentally re-educate to retrain the mind to overcome the addictive properties of the ‘modern’ food types such as refined sugars and processed fats. A switch to more natural foods initiates the process, but the mental addiction of ‘emotional hunger’ must also be addressed to distinguish it from normal ‘biological hunger’. Mental training is an essential ingredient of any successful training process.

Weight loss can never be maintained without all 4 of these stages being consistently applied and actively used. They are all interdependent.

Living in a nutritional hell is a mental choice…it always was.

Jeff Garcia of Aspirational Solutions specializes in providing tangible solutions to the demands of their client base through a comprehensive understanding and meticulous research of specific issues. These same discussions and dieting methods of success have been detailed in a publication called Glycemic Superfoods allowing everyone to review their own attitude and thought process towards their own diet and nutrition.

The risk of heart disease is greatly increased if you have high cholesterol. This can include potentially fatal heart attacks. Lowering cholesterol is recommended to lead a more healthy life and maintain a healthy heart. High cholesterol causes hardening of the arteries which reduces blood flow to the heart. This may result in chest pains or heart attack.

Favorable cholesterol levels should be less than 200. Anything over 240 is considered high risk. For severely high cholesterol it is recommended to seek consultation with a medical professional for treatment and medications. A physician will test the blood to determine the exact levels and to determine whether drug therapy is necessary. There are a number of drugs available to lower cholesterol. Your physician will be able to recommend one that is best. These include nicotinic acid and cholesterol absorption inhibitors

Most drug therapies are also used in tandem with lifestyle changes. Natural remedies are available in grocery stores, health food stores and pharmacies. Changing eating habits, toxic intake and activity levels will help lower cholesterol.

Low fat foods, especially green leafy vegetables are beneficial in your diet and will help reduce cholesterol. Ensuring a balanced diet from all food groups is ideal. Choose fresh fruits, fish, grains and soy. Avoid foods such as butter, margarine, prepackaged foods, junk foods and fast foods. These types are typically high in trans-fats, which are particularly damaging.

If you smoke, it can increase the chances of having high cholesterol. Quitting will not only help this but will also reduce several other medical risks. Also reduce your total caloric intake and maintain a healthy weight. Regular aerobic exercise will help achieve this. Lower the amount of alcohol consumption. Also, lessening your intake of caffeine such as coffee and tea will help.

There are several vitamins and supplements that can help lower cholesterol levels. Vitamin E, artichoke leaf extract, niacin and chromium are all reported to help control high levels of cholesterol. When using these options while on medication consult a physician for correct dosage. Some natural remedies will also react adversely with certain combinations so it is suggested you disclose all eating habits and dietary supplements to your doctor.

Heart disease is a potentially fatal condition that affects millions of people annually. Reducing the amount of cholesterol in your blood will help lower the risk of a heart attack. Taking medications per your doctor’s orders, making lifestyle changes and taking supplements can vastly improve your odds of remaining healthy.

Anabolic steroids provide benefits to athletes, weight trainers and to other people but they have continually raised questions wherein the answers are yet to be found. So what are steroids, anyway? Steroids are considered to be a huge group of chemicals wherein the head group is cholesterol. The structure of steroids is composed of the basic four-ring carbon structure but the difference lies in the attachment in the carbon number 17. Human bodies can store cholesterol and make large amounts of it.

There are various types of anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids are an example of a steroid which are anti-inflammatory agents and they break tissue down. They are drugs based on naturally-occurring hormones and are often a very significant part of lymphoma treatment. However, there are certain types of steroids known as anabolic steroids, which are produced synthetically. These resemble the structure and form of testosterone. Naturally produced testosterone can be found in men, primarily produced by the Leydig cells of the testes. In women, the adrenal glands are the primary source of testosterone.

The production of testosterone in women, however, is relatively less in amount as compared to the male. The steroids have many functions in our body. This is why doctors have prescribed steroids to their patients to help them overcome or manage certain diseases. Anabolic steroids are the ones that athletes and sports men and women are fond of taking because it increases muscle strength as well as enhances the body processes. However, it is known to have side effects. Testosterone has both anabolic and androgenic characteristics. Anabolic signifies tissue build-up and muscle growth. Androgenic depicts masculine emphasis like the deepening of the voice in males as well as the growth of body hair.

Often steroids are taken orally and usually have short-term effects. However, as time goes by, drug companies and scientists have continued to adapt anabolic steroids to fit patients needs. Some steroids are injected by intramuscular injection, commonly in the buttocks, and are said to last longer than those taken orally. Furthermore, these anabolic steroids are also chemically modified and made to inhibit rapid breakdown by the liver which results in enhanced metabolism and improved utilization. Orally ingested steroids were modified by the addition of a side chain for it to withstand inactivation of the first pass in the liver. However, these modifications are said to cause harsh effects in the liver. Injected steroids are gradually absorbed in the blood stream without the first pass in the liver.

In addition, the liver goes through a lower concentration than with oral anabolic steroids. Because of this, doctors prefer injections rather than oral. Most of these injectable steroids undergo esterification to slow down the liver’s breakdown. Anabolic steroids are common to athletes. They use steroids to optimize and improve their muscle strength and performance. Anabolic steroids are also good for the therapy of certain diseases like anemias and a rare form of edema. Testosterone supplementations have been found to be a means of male contraception. Steroids have many good uses, however, there are downsides to them, too so it’s important to seek medical advice prior to taking any course of steroids.

Lunesta! What’s all the fuss about?

It even sounds festive doesn’t it ? And it appears that with this sleep medication, there may well be cause for celebration!

It’s been some months now since Lunesta first appeared on the scene and was blessed by the FDA. So how has this non-narcotic, non habit forming sleep aid been performing? Well from the information I have gathered, it seems Lunesta is stacking up very well compared to the other available forms of prescription sleep medication.

Lunesta (generic name Eszopiclone) was brought out by a company called Sepracor which has done extensive tests on the medication, the majority of which have had positive results so far, although the tests are still ongoing.

One of the greatest advantages of Lunesta is that it is the only sleep medication approved for long term use. This is a boon for those with chronic insomnia. In some cases the insomnia has been known to disappear altogether. Tests have shown those who have stopped taking Lunesta haven’t suffered any rebound insomnia or withdrawal, both well known problems for those taking the benzodiazepine medications.

Another major advantage is that Lunesta is useful for both sleep onset and sleep maintenance insomnia. Meaning it will work as well for those who for have trouble falling asleep as for those who have trouble staying asleep. A caveat here though, Lunesta should be taken just before going to bed as it a fast acting medication. Don’t take Lunesta and then take a trip to the movies! Also make sure you have eight hours set aside for sleep as it is also long lasting (no driving the car please before that time!)

Lunesta is available in 1, 2 and 3 mg tablets. It’s best to start with a low dose and increase if needed.

Possible Side Effects Every medication can have it’s side effects and those that are possible with Lunesta include:

Next day drowsiness Dizziness Headaches Uncoordination

Lunesta should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women as the effect on infants is not yet known. See your doctor first.

Lunesta and Depression If you’ve ever been depressed, you’ll remember those agonizing hours between 2 and 4am tossing and turning and worrying about everything! What can you do when your depression medication precludes taking any form of sleeping aid? Never fear! Tests have shown that Lunesta is well tolerated by those taking Prozac (an anti-depressant drug) A ten week survey was done comparing patients on Prozac and Lunesta with patients on Prozac and a placebo (sugar pill)

Results found the Lunesta patients showed significant improvements. They fell asleep more quickly, stayed asleep longer and were more alert during the day.

Lunesta is available on prescription in the US. It’s not yet available in Australia (that’s why they call us “down under”!) Those in other countries would need to ask their doctor.

This article is for informational purposes only and should not replace individual medical advice from you health care provider.
